Update on Kailer's GI Appt

Well most of the appointment consisted of the Dr telling me everything I already suspected or confirming my suspicions that I told her. It was kinda like Here's what I think and what I did doc and doc says yup you were right and your doctor was wrong. *where did I sign up to be a dr? I must have slept through med school*LOL

The GI Dr suspects that Kailer had the rotavirus which caused the severe diarhea. She explained that the virus damages the small intestine inside of it and that is why he seems to be reacting to protiens in milk etc. because his intestine is damaged and trying to heal. She said I did the correct thing by pulling everything from my diet as that allows him some more time to heal. She told me I no longer have to be on the total elimination diet, but she recommends I steer clear of straight cows milk. She said she thinks that cooked milk (cookies, bread etc) should be ok but things like milk, sour cream etc especially in large amounts could upset his stomach. She told me the green poo indicates diarhea and bacteria more then a food allergy. She agreed that the mucus in his diaper was NOT ok and she was surprised his dr didn't test any stool samples during all of this. His blood tests all came back great, although one of the tests that indicates allergies was elevated.. DUH... sigh She said since he comes from such a strong allergy background (daddy, mommy, grandparents, great grandparents) there is a chance that it could be allergies and she thinks that could very well have been Kaeden's problem as an infant instead of the stupid colic the dr kept passing it off on. I think it's time to find me a new dr. This GI dr wasn't my favorite lady, but she seemed to know what she was doing. She told me if we decide to use any formula we need to use allimentum.. YIKES it's $25 a can! OWIE. I think I'll just control my diet She did give us a free sample in case we wanted to try it out and gave us the green light for solids when I want to give it to him. Just warned us to be extra careful with the introduction to watch for reactions. I feel so horrible today though. Thurs when we found out we had the GI appt I went off my elimination diet in hopes of having him react while we were at the appt. Guess when he decided to react?? Last night and all morning sigh Poor baby is miserable and now I'm feeling like a giant POS since I know I inflicted this on him. I'm kinda surprised it took this long for him to react though!! I'm hoping this means that in small doses (I went overboard on the milk/dairy on purpose) I can still have my cheese here and there provided he handles it ok.

That's most of the update. I'm just thankful he ended up being ok! I am angry that his dr did not test for this virus after the repeated dr appts in regards to this water poo. Most babies end up hospitalized from this virus from what I hear and am very thankful Kai made it through like the tough little trooper he is without ending up in the hospital, but what if they'd been able to make him feel better throughout all of this? I'm just angry that this was ignored for so long, and by the time we did get into the dr he was practically healed. He has not gained hardly any weight since Mid Dec. Shortly after Dec 13th (the day Quintin was born) Kailer weighed 12lb even. It is now Feb 21st TWO FULL MONTHS later and he is weighing in at 12lb8oz. Hmmm 1/2lb weight gain in 2 months is just not a good thing. The good news is that he has gained back the 2 oz that he had lost during all of this. The GI Dr explained it to me that all of his nutrients have been going towards healing his intestine instead of packing on the fat and he should start slowly gaining again. I sure hope so! I feel like such a bad mommy when I look at him and he looks so tiny compare to all other babies his age and I KNOW something is bothering him. It would be a different story if he was just a "small" baby.

Thx for listening and for all P&PT sent out to him.

Now onto the rest of our day yesterday. We had a wonderful trip to Spokane and stopped to visit Steven's brother Tony and his family. Wow little Sami is getting so big! I can't believe he'll be 2 in June!!! He seemed to enjoy playing with Kaeden and Kailer. Kaeden got to go outside with Uncle Tony and turn on the the police car lights and siren which he thought was very cool! we stuck around and had dinner with them and got left quite late LOL But it was nice to see them. We also shopped before the appt at Costco and spent a small fortune, but we now should have meat to last us for a very long time! LOL Thank god for my paycheck and tax returns LOL Well time to get some housework done since I'm home with 2 sneezy runny nosed boys today.
